Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born. Astrology reads it as your emotional side: how you react when something touches you, what helps you feel safe, and what you reach for when you are tired or stressed.

Your sun sign comes from your birthday. Your moon sign needs a little more, because the Moon moves through a sign in only about two to two and a half days. Two people born a week apart can have the same sun sign and very different moons.

As with all astrology, treat this as a language for reflection, not a rulebook. Many people find it a useful way to put words to feelings they already know they have.

What is a moon sign?

In a birth chart, the Sun is often described as your core identity, the part of you that wants to be seen. The Moon is the part that wants to be comfortable. It is linked to mood, habit, memory and the way you take care of yourself and others.

That is why people often say the moon sign shows up most when you are at home, with people you trust, or under pressure. Your sun sign might be what colleagues see on a Monday morning. Your moon sign is more likely what your closest friend sees after a hard week.

Moon sign vs sun sign

The two answer different questions.

  • Sun sign: who you are trying to become and how you like to show up. It changes sign about once a month, so your birthday is enough to find it.
  • Moon sign: how you feel, and what you need in order to feel okay. It changes sign every couple of days, so you need your birth date, and ideally your birth time and place.

Neither one is "more important." Astrologers tend to read them together, along with the rising sign, which describes how you come across when you first meet someone. If you want to see how your sun sign sits next to others, our horoscope pages are a good place to start.

How to find your moon sign

A birthday alone is usually not enough, so you cannot read your moon sign off a date range the way you can your sun sign. You need these details:

  • Your birth date
  • Your birth place, so the time can be converted correctly
  • Your birth time, as exact as you can get it

If you do not know your birth time, you can often still find your moon sign. The Moon only changes sign once every two days or so, so on most birthdays it sat in a single sign all day. The exception is the day it moved from one sign to the next. On those days the answer depends on the hour, and without a birth time you can only narrow it to two possible signs.

Your birth certificate or a call to a parent is the easiest way to get the time. Hospitals in many countries record it to the minute.

Once you have those details, a chart calculation does the rest. The Astrofio Birth Chart Report works from your exact date, time and place of birth, calculates your sun, moon and rising signs, and then reads them together in a written 15-page report. A moon sign on its own is only one voice in the conversation, and the report shows how it sits alongside the others.

What each moon sign means

Here is a short reading for each one. Remember that these describe tendencies, and that your own chart has many other moving parts.

Moon in Aries. Feelings arrive fast and loud. You tend to react first and process afterwards, and you usually cool down just as quickly. Comfort for you often means action: a walk, a workout, finally dealing with the thing. You dislike being kept waiting for an answer. See Aries for the sun sign side.

Moon in Taurus. You settle your nerves through the senses: good food, soft fabrics, a familiar routine. Change feels easier when it comes slowly. Once you trust someone, you tend to stay loyal for a long time, and you may be slow to forgive a broken promise.

Moon in Gemini. You process feelings by talking about them, or by writing them down. Silence can feel heavy. Many people with this moon need variety and conversation to feel okay, and may joke when they are actually upset. Gemini shares the same curious streak.

Moon in Cancer. The Moon is at home in Cancer, so this placement is often described as deeply tender. You may read a room's mood the moment you enter. Home, family and the people you feed or look after matter a lot, and you can go quiet and shell-like when hurt.

Moon in Leo. You want to feel appreciated, and warmth from others lands hard. A sincere compliment can change your whole day, while being ignored stings more than you let on. You tend to be generous and loyal, and you take pride in doing things with heart.

Moon in Virgo. You calm down by being useful: tidying, planning, fixing something. Worry can turn into a to-do list. You may be hard on yourself and quietly attentive to others, remembering small details about what they need.

Moon in Libra. Peace is the thing you are after. Arguments can leave you drained for hours, and you may swallow your own opinion to keep the mood smooth. You usually feel better with company, good manners and a pleasant space around you.

Moon in Scorpio. Feelings run deep and are rarely shown in full. You tend to need real trust before you open up, and half-truths bother you. When you do commit emotionally, it is usually all the way. See Scorpio for a related intensity.

Moon in Sagittarius. Freedom helps you breathe. Being fenced in by routine or by someone's mood makes you restless, and you often cope through humor, travel or a big-picture view. You tend to recover quickly and look forward rather than back.

Moon in Capricorn. You tend to keep your guard up and deal with feelings privately and practically. Reliability is how you show love. Many people with this moon seem older than their age as children, and relax more as they get older.

Moon in Aquarius. You need some space to think about what you feel before you can share it. Friendship and shared ideals can feel safer than intense one-on-one scenes. You may be warm in a slightly detached way, and fiercely loyal to your own sense of who you are.

Moon in Pisces. You absorb the mood around you like a sponge, which makes alone time important. Music, water, art and sleep tend to restore you. Your empathy is a strength, but it helps to learn where other people's feelings end and yours begin.

Moon sign and the rest of your chart

Your moon sign is one placement among many. Someone with a bold Aries sun and a Cancer moon may seem confident outside and surprisingly sensitive underneath. Someone with a Capricorn sun and a Pisces moon may look disciplined but dream a lot.

The rising sign adds another layer, the first impression you give. Reading sun, moon and rising together usually says more than any one of them alone.

FAQ

What is a moon sign?

It is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied when you were born. In astrology it describes your emotional nature, instincts and what makes you feel secure.

Is the moon sign more important than the sun sign?

Not really. They describe different things. The sun sign is about identity and drive, the moon sign about feelings and needs. Most astrologers read them together.

Can I find my moon sign without my birth time?

Often, yes. The Moon stays in one sign for about two days, so on many birthdays the answer is the same all day. If the Moon changed sign on your birth date, you will need the birth time to be sure.

How often does the Moon change sign?

Roughly every two to two and a half days, so it passes through all twelve signs in a little under a month.

Can my moon sign differ from my sun sign?

Yes, and for most people it does. Having the same sun and moon sign is possible, and some people describe it as a very "pure" version of that sign, but it is not the norm.
