The new moon is the quietest night of the month. The Moon sits between the Earth and the Sun, its lit side faces away from us, and the sky is at its darkest. In astrology it marks a fresh start, the moment to plant something you want to grow over the next four weeks.
Setting intentions on the new moon is one of the simplest rituals there is. It takes ten minutes, it costs nothing, and done well, it is a surprisingly useful habit for steering your life. Here is how to do it properly.
Intentions are not wishes
A wish is something you hope will happen to you. An intention is a direction you choose to move in. The difference matters, because intentions give you something to do tomorrow morning.
- Wish: "I want to be rich."
- Intention: "I am building a savings habit, starting with a set amount every payday."
- Wish: "I want to find love."
- Intention: "I am making space for a relationship by saying yes to more invitations and leaving the apps that drain me."
Notice that a good intention is small enough to act on and big enough to matter.
How to set new moon intentions, step by step
1. Find a quiet ten minutes. The night of the new moon or the next day or two is ideal. You do not need to see the Moon. You won't be able to.
2. Clear a small space. A tidy table, a candle or lamp, a glass of water, your phone in another room. The goal is to signal to yourself that this is a pause from normal life.
3. Look back first. Spend two minutes thinking about the last month. What worked? What drained you? What do you want more of?
4. Write three intentions, not ten. Three is enough to cover a couple of areas of life without spreading yourself thin. Write them by hand if you can.
5. Write in the present tense. "I am" and "I choose" feel more real than "I will" or "I want". For example: "I am going to bed by 11 on weeknights."
6. Add one first step to each. One action you can take in the next three days. This is the part most people skip, and it is the part that works.
7. Close the ritual. Read your intentions out loud once. Blow out the candle. Put the paper somewhere you will see it, like your bedside table or the inside of your journal.
8. Check in at the full moon. About two weeks later, read your list again. What moved? What needs adjusting? Then use the full moon to let go of what got in the way.
Example intentions by area of life
- Love: "I am honest about what I want, even early on."
- Friendship: "I reach out first instead of waiting to be asked."
- Work: "I protect two hours each morning for the work that matters most."
- Money: "I check my bank account every Sunday without fear."
- Health: "I move my body for twenty minutes a day, in a way I enjoy."
- Self-worth: "I stop apologising for taking up space."
- Rest: "I take one evening a week with no plans."
